Transforming Early Childhood Development through enterprise solutions
In South Africa, approximately 1.3 million children aged 3 to 5 lack access to early learning programmes, with the highest disparities in the poorest regions, where nearly two out of every three children miss out.
Unlike other education sectors, the South African government does not directly deliver early childhood development (ECD) services. Instead, these are primarily provided by small, owner-operated businesses that rely on parental fees to sustain operations.
IMBE addresses this gap by supporting informal microenterprises in the ECD sector with innovative enterprise solutions to strengthen their financial resilience. Our focus is on supporting women sole proprietors who have established ECD centres within their communities. While these women are deeply passionate about working with children, many lack the foundational business skills needed to run sustainable enterprises. They also face systemic exclusion from formal financial systems and commercial opportunities.
Our programmes empower ECD businesses to stabilise and grow their income.
Our approach includes three key pillars:
Entrepreneur capacity building
We equip ECD owners with essential business management skills, including child recruitment, fee collection, and financial record-keeping. Strong financial capability is critical, as even small financial errors can lead to losses or business closure.
Improving access to capital
We help entrepreneurs access funding opportunities to support growth and resilience.
Reducing operating costs
We identify and implement cost-saving measures that improve business sustainability.
Together, our approach can increase the net income of participants by
10-20% over a period of 12 to 18 months, modelled as follows:
Investing in ECD has a triple impact
For children: Better education and improved outcomes.
For parents: Enables women’s economic participation as mothers and caregivers can go to work.
For practitioners: Provides income opportunities for enterprising women.
